
Mozarteum University Salzburg has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Heinrich Magometschnigg, a respected physician and former Deputy Chair of the university’s council, who died on 2026, at the age of 73.Magometschnigg served as Deputy Chair of the University Council from 2013 to 2016, where he was widely admired for his professional expertise, leadership experience, and warm personality. Beyond his contributions to the arts university, he had a distinguished medical career and previously served as Medical Director and Head Physician at Salzburg University Hospital.He earned his doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1980 and later specialized in surgery and vascular surgery. In 1994, he joined the Salzburg State Clinics and later became Chief Physician and a key leader at Paracelsus Medical Private University, where he served as Dean for Human Medicine and Dean of Clinical Affairs. From 2006 to 2017, he was Medical Director of the University Hospital before retiring.Despite his success in medicine, Magometschnigg maintained a lifelong passion for music, having grown up in a musical family and once considering a career as a pianist. His deep appreciation for music strengthened his connection to the Mozarteum community.The university remembered him as a thoughtful leader whose empathy, dedication, and love for music left a lasting impact on the institution and those who worked with him.
