A unique literature event introduced students to two of Hungary’s most famous poets through a theatrical performance at University of Nyíregyháza on March 3. The production titled Ady/Petőfi, presented by the theatre group Nézőművészeti Kft., offered a creative approach to literature by portraying poets Endre Ady and Sándor Petőfi as real people rather than distant historical figures. The performance combined poetry, letters, diary excerpts, music, and humor to present lesser-known aspects of the poets’ lives. Actors used modern elements, including contemporary language and rap-style performances, to make the stories more relatable for young audiences. Students studying Hungarian language and literature, along with high school students from the university’s practice school, attended the event.Following the performance, participants discussed the themes and historical context of the poets’ lives. Organizers emphasized that the goal was not simply to recite poems but to show the human experiences behind the works—such as love, ambition, politics, and everyday struggles.Students and teacher trainees said the event provided a fresh perspective on classic literature and demonstrated how drama and creative storytelling can make literature lessons more engaging in classrooms.
