
Karel Malý, a respected legal historian and former rector of Charles University, has passed away at the age of 95. Malý began his academic career at the university’s Faculty of Law in 1954, where he became a leading scholar in Czech legal history, focusing especially on the development of criminal law during the early modern period.After the political changes in 1989, Malý played an important role in shaping the future of the university. He first served as vice-rector and later as rector from 1994 to 2000. During his leadership, he helped stabilize and modernize the university, strengthening academic self-governance and expanding international cooperation.Malý also contributed to the creation of the Czech Rectors Conference and supported reforms that led to the modern Czech higher education law. Over his career, he received numerous honors, including national and international academic awards and honorary doctorates.A condolence book has been opened for the public at the historic Karolinum building, where people can pay tribute to the late professor.
