
The Hungarian University of Dance will host a symposium titled “Impact of Historical Turning Points on Dance: 1956” on October 16, 2026 in Budapest, marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.The event, organized by the Department of Art Theory and the Dance Research Center, explores how the 1956 revolution influenced Hungarian dance, including ballet, folk, and contemporary styles. It will examine:Institutional changes before and after 1956.Effects on national identity and folk dance.Media reflections in 1950s dance press.Cultural policy impacts on dance.Personal artist trajectories and émigré careers.Choreographic responses to trauma, oppression, and resistance.Censorship and aesthetic changes.Contemporary dance reflections on 1956’s legacy.Interdisciplinary approaches combining dance with music, literature, theater, and film are encouraged. Presenters are invited to submit 20-minute proposals and synopses (~2000 characters) by April 10, 2026. Notifications of acceptance will follow by May 15, 2026.The symposium aims to deepen understanding of how historical events shape artistic expression and collective memory in dance.
