A South East Technological University researcher, Dr Evan Matthews, co-authored a report commissioned by The Lancet Psychiatry calling for urgent lifestyle changes in mental health care. The report outlines strategies to reduce the 15-year life expectancy gap for people with mental illness by integrating interventions in physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and smoking into standard treatment.
Developed with 30 experts from 19 countries, the report sets out eight recommendations and 19 priorities, including upskilling mental health staff, embedding exercise and nutrition specialists, and ensuring culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care. The findings aim to transform mental health systems globally and create supportive environments for sustainable healthy choices.
