The independent pediatric surgery department in Szeged was established on 1 September 1966, when professor Domokos Boda asked surgeon István Altorjay to create a modern pediatric surgical unit. At that time, pediatric surgery was still emerging as a distinct specialty both in Hungary and internationally.Throughout the decades, the clinic adopted advanced medical techniques through international collaborations and study visits in cities such as Halle, Zurich, and Glasgow. These experiences helped introduce modern neonatal surgery, pediatric urology procedures, and innovative endoscopic techniques in Hungary. One of the most notable achievements came in 1998, when a team led by Prof. Füzesi successfully performed the separation surgery of the conjoined twins Melinda and Izabella, a landmark event in Hungarian pediatric surgery that gained nationwide media attention.Today, pediatric surgery at the university continues to evolve with minimally invasive procedures and robotic surgery, improving treatment outcomes for young patients.
