ELLIS Institute Finland, the newest hub in the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), has announced the recruitment of nine new professors as principal investigators for the 2025–2026 academic year. Selected from a highly competitive pool of 360 applicants, the scholars will establish research groups across Finnish universities, with several appointed as PS Fellows supported by Foundation PS.
Among them, Mikko Karttunen will join the University of Eastern Finland as professor and PS Fellow in the Department of Technical Physics, beginning September 1, 2025. Karttunen, currently Canada Research Chair at the University of Western Ontario, specializes in computational materials and biomaterials research, with expertise in high-performance simulations, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
The institute’s director, Professor Samuel Kaski of Aalto University, emphasized the significance of the appointments: “They represent the most cutting-edge research in AI and machine learning today and will get the institute off to a flying start.”
ELLIS Institute Finland, founded in 2025, is the second ELLIS institute in Europe and aims to serve as a world-class research hub for artificial intelligence and machine learning, offering access to resources like the EuroHPC LUMI supercomputer and strong ties to both academia and industry.
