Walter Prevenier, a legendary professor of historical criticism at Ghent University, is returning briefly to the Blandijn campus for two special lectures, decades after his retirement in 1999. Prevenier taught generations of students in the 1980s and 1990s to critically analyze historical sources and question what is real and what is fabricated, long before the age of social media and fake news. The return lectures are organized by two alumni associations—the Bond van Gentse Germanisten and OSGG (Oud Studenten Geschiedenis Gent)—to allow former students to experience Prevenier’s teaching once again. The events are fully booked, reflecting the enduring popularity of his storytelling approach and dynamic lectures.Alumni recall the engaging atmosphere of his classes in Auditorium E (now Auditorium 5 Jeanne Wiemer), noting his innovative use of images, videos, and vivid narrative techniques that made history feel alive. Many cite his courses as formative in developing critical thinking skills that continue to influence how they evaluate information today. The lectures, held on March 26 and April 2, 2026, will also be available online afterward via the UGent Faculty of Arts and Philosophy YouTube channel.
