The University of Coimbra (UC) hosted the 2026 European Student Orchestra Festival (ESOF) from March 26–29, marking the first time the event took place in Southern Europe. Around 300 student musicians participated, including the Orquestra Académica da Universidade de Coimbra (OAUC) as the host, alongside four other European university orchestras from Leipzig, Lüneburg, Strasbourg, and Toulouse.After individual performances, the orchestras joined for a final concert at the Pátio das Escolas, conducted by OAUC maestro André Granjo. The festival showcased a wide range of instruments from strings, woodwinds, brass, to percussion, reflecting diverse musical traditions and cultures.Participants praised Coimbra for its historic and academic environment, highlighting the value of international cultural exchange. Vice-Rector Delfim Leão emphasized that the event demonstrated the spirit of European collaboration and optimism for the future through young musicians working together.The 2026 ESOF was organized by OAUC in partnership with the UC Tuna Académica, the University of Coimbra, and Coimbra City Council.
