Uppsala University has shared expert advice on managing the annual rise in pollen allergies as spring begins.According to Professor Christer Janson, pollen allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless proteins from trees and grasses. This triggers the production of IgE antibodies and releases substances like histamine, causing symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing. The condition has increased significantly since the 1990s, with research linking the rise to climate change and higher pollen levels in the air. Urban populations tend to experience stronger symptoms, while early exposure in rural environments may help build some resistance.Experts highlight that itching is a key sign of pollen allergy, and symptoms often follow a seasonal pattern. Over-the-counter medications can help mild cases, while more severe symptoms may require anti-inflammatory treatments or allergy immunotherapy. The university also emphasized practical tips, including monitoring pollen forecasts, changing clothes after being outdoors, and keeping indoor spaces clean to reduce exposure.
