Prof. Dr. Borbenyi Zita, a distinguished internist and hematologist, has been awarded the prestigious main prize of the Szeged Foundation in 2026 in recognition of her five decades of outstanding contributions to patient care, medical research, and education.Currently serving as the head of the Hematology and Transplantation Center at the University of Szeged’s Szent Gyorgyi Albert Clinical Center, Professor Borbenyi has dedicated her entire professional career to improving patient outcomes and advancing the field of hematology.Her journey began with a strong passion for natural sciences during her high school years, which eventually led her to pursue medical studies in Szeged. Since earning her degree, she has remained committed to the same institution, where she built an impressive career marked by both national and international achievements.Throughout her career, Professor Borbenyi gained valuable international experience, including research work in the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. She played a pioneering role in introducing advanced hematological research methods in Hungary, particularly in the field of blood cell culture and experimental hematology.Despite facing significant challenges, including the sudden loss of key leaders in her department, she helped guide and develop the hematology unit, contributing to the establishment of modern treatment methods such as stem cell transplantation. Her leadership has been instrumental in maintaining high professional standards while continuously improving patient care.In addition to her clinical and research work, she has been deeply involved in medical education, mentoring generations of students who have gone on to become successful physicians.Professor Borbenyi emphasized the importance of perseverance, dedication, and strong personal support systems in achieving a fulfilling career.
