University of Ljubljana has issued a public statement expressing strong support for University of Belgrade and defending the principle of university autonomy amid recent developments in Serbia.The statement follows reports that criminal police units entered the University of Belgrade, raising concerns about the protection of institutional independence—considered a fundamental value of European higher education.The situation is unfolding alongside ongoing student mobilisations in Serbia, where students have been advocating for democratic standards, institutional accountability, and the rule of law. The University of Ljubljana noted that increasing pressure on universities threatens spaces traditionally dedicated to critical thinking and open debate.The university also recalled its earlier condemnation of violence against students in Serbia and highlighted the tragic death of a student during the protests, stressing the need for serious attention to such incidents.Reaffirming its position, the University of Ljubljana emphasized that university autonomy is not a privilege but a core requirement for functioning in a democratic society. It also joined a statement by the UNICA Network, which called for respect for academic freedom, institutional independence, and the rule of law.The university pledged continued support for the academic community in Serbia and committed to working with international partners to safeguard the integrity and autonomy of higher education institutions.
