Belgium | The Vrije Universiteit Brussel hosted a reflective discussion led by political scientist Dave Sinardet to mark 30 years of Brussels Pride and evaluate the state of LGBTQIA+ rights in Belgium. Although Belgium historically pioneered progressive legislation—becoming the second country globally to legalize same-sex marriage in 2003—recent studies indicate an alarming decline in social acceptance among younger generations and rising reports of targeted violence. Sinardet emphasized that statutory achievements provide no absolute guarantee against societal regression, pointing to conservative shifts across international political landscapes. The discourse highlighted the vital role of educational systems in passing on democratic values, as well as recent legislative proposals to permanently enshrine marriage equality into the Constitution to safeguard minority groups from potential political shifts.
