A professor from Jagiellonian University has been honored with one of Krakow’s most prestigious distinctions recognizing women’s contributions to society.Dr hab. Beata Kowalska, a sociology professor at the university’s Faculty of Philosophy, received the Kazimiera Bujwid Award, which is granted annually to women whose work has made a significant impact on social, scientific, or civic life. The award also highlights contributions that have historically gone underrecognized, particularly in advancing equality.Kowalska is known for her academic and social engagement in areas such as gender studies, citizenship, and grassroots social movements. She has also played a key role in promoting academic values and rights, previously serving as the university’s first Ombudsperson for Academic Rights and Values.The award, established by the Krakow City Council, honors the legacy of Kazimiera Bujwidowa, a pioneer in advocating for women’s education and equal rights. Her efforts included promoting literacy, supporting access to education for girls, and contributing to early movements for women’s voting rights.Alongside Kowalska, three other women were recognized this year for their contributions to social activism, disability support, and cultural initiatives. The recognition further emphasizes the importance of civic engagement and equality-driven work in modern society.
