Poland | The Gdansk University of Technology has successfully completed the first operational mission of its underwater drone named “Pirania,” marking an important milestone in marine technology development.During a test conducted in Sobieszewo, the prototype performed a full mission cycle including launch, submersion, underwater navigation, detection, and identification of two target objects, followed by a safe return to the launch point. The system demonstrated key capabilities such as communication, maneuvering, imaging, and sonar-based reconnaissance. The drone is being developed in cooperation with RADMOR S.A., part of the WB Group, and is designed for inspection and monitoring of critical underwater infrastructure. It can detect seabed anomalies and support maritime safety operations using advanced camera and sonar technologies.University officials highlighted that the successful mission confirms the ability of academic research to be transformed into practical solutions with real-world applications. The project is also an example of effective collaboration between science and industry. The system is designed for dual use, meaning it can be applied in both civilian and specialized security operations, particularly in monitoring ports and underwater infrastructure.
