Finland | A student from the University of Helsinki has developed an innovative smart collar that monitors dog health, attracting strong market interest with a waiting list of over 10,000 people.Chemistry student Max Ahonen created the collar to track key health indicators in dogs, including heart rate, body temperature, sleep patterns, stress levels, and daily activity. The device works alongside a mobile app that alerts owners if unusual health changes are detected, helping ensure early intervention. The system uses a microchip inserted into the dog’s neck, which connects to the collar sensor and continuously sends data to the owner’s smartphone. Designed for both pet owners and veterinarians, the technology aims to improve animal welfare by enabling more accurate and timely health monitoring while potentially reducing costly veterinary visits. The idea was further developed with support from the university’s business incubator, which helped Ahonen refine the concept and launch his startup, Dora Health. The program provided mentorship, resources, and networking opportunities essential for turning the idea into a viable product. The smart collar has quickly gained attention due to its practical benefits and growing demand. While currently designed for dogs, future versions may expand to other animals such as cats and horses.
