Ireland | ucc.ie and Met Éireann have launched a new bilingual educational resource that uses storytelling to help primary and secondary school students learn about climate change. The project, Chasing the Curlew’s Call, combines climate science, creative writing, visual storytelling, and classroom activities to make environmental education more engaging and accessible. The resource includes a graphic novel, lesson plans, teacher guides, discussion prompts, and interactive activities designed for use in schools across Ireland.Developed through collaboration between UCC researchers, educators, students, and the public, the initiative focuses on the endangered Eurasian Curlew and explores themes such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental responsibility.According to project researchers, school trials showed increased student confidence in explaining climate change, greater awareness of endangered wildlife, and stronger engagement with environmental issues. The team will continue evaluating the impact of storytelling on climate education through surveys completed by participating schools. The full collection of educational materials, including the graphic novel and supporting resources, is now available for schools nationwide.
