Belgium | The University of Namur has highlighted its strong involvement in the fight against cancer through projects supported by the Telethons initiative. Researchers from the faculties of Science and Medicine, along with multiple departments and the Narilis Institute, are actively working on improving cancer diagnosis, treatment, and patient care.During the 2026 Telethon event, university representatives presented a donation of 20,000 euros to support ongoing research funded by the FNRS. The contribution helps finance projects across Belgian universities aimed at developing more effective and targeted cancer treatments.Several research teams are focusing on improving radiotherapy and proton therapy to increase treatment efficiency while reducing side effects. Other projects study how cancer cells develop resistance to treatment, as well as how immune responses can be strengthened to better destroy tumors.Additional studies include work on skin cancers, brain tumors such as glioblastoma, and pancreatic cancer, one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-detect forms of the disease. Researchers are also exploring early diagnostic biomarkers to improve survival chances through earlier detection.Beyond laboratory research, the university community actively contributes to fundraising through student events, including improvisation matches, quiz nights, and charity livestreams. These initiatives demonstrate strong engagement from students and staff in supporting medical research.Overall, the University of Namur emphasizes that scientific research, early diagnosis, and innovation in treatment remain essential in improving survival rates and offering hope to cancer patients.
