Portugal | A study conducted by the School of Nursing of the reveals that Portuguese citizens generally hold a positive view of nurses, describing them as caring, empathetic, and scientifically trained, while also expressing a desire for greater social recognition of the profession.
Based on a survey of 296 adults, the research shows that most respondents associate nurses with strong interpersonal qualities such as attentiveness and empathy. However, many also believe that the profession does not receive the level of recognition it deserves in society.
The study also highlights mixed public understanding of nurses’ responsibilities, with respondents recognizing their role in patient care and clinical tasks, but often underestimating their autonomy in decision making and advanced clinical functions.
Researchers conclude that although nursing is respected, public perception still reflects an outdated view of the profession, emphasizing the need for better communication about nurses’ expanding roles in healthcare, education, research, and public health.
