Belgium | Ellen Goossens, professor and researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), has been awarded the Liebaers–Van Steirteghem Prize for her outstanding contributions to life sciences with clear clinical impact. The award recognises her pioneering work in reproductive medicine, particularly in restoring and preserving fertility in men and boys at risk of infertility. Her research focuses on developing advanced laboratory techniques to generate sperm cells and improve fertility restoration options for patients with currently limited treatment possibilities.Goossens highlighted that the prize is especially meaningful due to its connection to her academic mentors and ongoing research in fertility preservation. One of her key achievements includes the first successful transplantation of testicular tissue in a man who lost fertility in childhood, a result of decades of research and international collaboration. She emphasized that continued support from VUB, UZ Brussel, and research funding bodies has been essential in translating laboratory findings into real clinical applications that can improve patients’ lives. The prize further supports her ongoing work to develop new reproductive technologies and strengthen the bridge between fundamental research and clinical practice.
