
Ireland | Olympian Nicola Tuthill has made history by becoming the first person to win the university’s highest sporting honor for a second time. The elite athlete was named the Dr. Tony O’Neill Sportsperson of the Year at the 2026 Athletic Union Council (AUC) Sports Awards, repeating her achievement from 2025.The 22-year-old hammer thrower secured the honor after a standout season, which included winning a silver medal at the European Throwing Cup with a personal best of 72.48m—marking the nation’s first-ever senior medal at the event. Tuthill, who made her Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games, was among 550 students honored across 30 different university clubs during the annual event. The ceremony also recognized several other outstanding collective and individual achievements. The Ladies and Men’s Boat Club took home “Elite Club of the Year,” while the Women’s Rugby first team won “Varsity Team of the Year” following an undefeated season where they captured all four available trophies. Additionally, the university presented its inaugural Club Sustainability Award to UCD Archery, while UCD Karate received the Club Inclusion Award.
