An astronomy teacher has shared frustration over a major decline in student participation in an end-of-year “egg drop” engineering project that was previously highly successful in their classes. The project requires high school students to design and build protective structures using materials sourced from home before testing them in a final drop experiment.
The teacher noted that while last year most groups were actively engaged and produced creative designs, this year only a small fraction of students have started building anything despite the assignment carrying test-grade weight and a strict deadline. The post highlights concerns about declining student motivation and inconsistent engagement in hands-on classroom activities, even when the project format remains unchanged.
