Ireland | Two pioneering green-technology projects have secured over €1.2 million in commercialization funding from Enterprise Ireland to transform agricultural innovations into scalable corporate enterprises. Originating from a specialized national agri-food sustainability accelerator program, the initiatives target ecological challenges through advanced molecular biology and carbon utilization frameworks.The first financed venture, named BiCO, has engineered an innovative system that captures carbon dioxide and converts it into a stable bicarbonate solution. This chemical substrate can be directly absorbed by microalgae, drastically lowering production costs and boosting biomass yields to create an eco-friendly protein source for food and animal feed. Concurrently, the second venture, Mehal, is launching an automated crop-intelligence platform tailored for the horticulture sector. By leveraging environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling techniques, the system isolates microscopic traces of biological material to identify destructive insects, allowing growers to manage pests efficiently without blanket pesticide application. Both research teams will utilize the capital over the next two years to transition their laboratory models into commercial market entities.
