
Hungary | Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) is hosting a year-long program series throughout 2026 to celebrate its prominent alumnus, László Krasznahorkai, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The tribute includes interdisciplinary lecture series spanning philosophy, musicology, and media studies to explore the author’s visionary literary career. As the highlight of the celebratory year, ELTE will officially confer an honorary doctorate upon the world-renowned novelist on September 18.Krasznahorkai studied Hungarian language, literature, and cultural studies at ELTE’s Faculty of Humanities between 1978 and 1983. Celebrated internationally for his linguistic virtuosity and apocalyptic prose, his debut 1985 novel, Sátántangó, was later adapted into an iconic film by director Béla Tarr. Alongside the honorary doctorate ceremony, the university’s autumn itinerary features a dedicated public translator workshop on October 15, followed by a three-day international literary conference in English to analyze his extensive written oeuvre.
