Sweden | A new economic report reveals that Sweden is at risk of missing vital opportunities for accelerated economic growth due to an escalating shortage of skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Despite maintaining substantial investments in research and boasting high levels of international openness, the nation faces critical constraints in converting global scientific discoveries into domestic economic expansion. The research emphasizes that while a country can achieve significant productivity gains by utilizing innovations developed abroad, doing so effectively requires a highly skilled domestic workforce capable of applying those complex concepts. Currently, a low interest in scientific disciplines among youth combined with a low number of graduates in technical fields severely restricts this capacity. The analysis concludes that existing policy goals are insufficient to counter these educational deficits. It calls for immediate and highly ambitious initiatives to revitalize STEM education and spark early interest in technical fields to secure long-term competitiveness and economic resilience.
