Sweden | A new study from Lund University in Sweden shows that underground fungi are essential for restoring fragile tropical island ecosystems at places like Palmyra Atoll Researchers found that these fungi form a vital partnership with rainforest trees helping transfer nutrients between land and sea The study explains that removing invasive coconut plantations alone is not enough for full recovery because native fungi must also be present for forests to regenerate properly These fungi support trees such as Pisonia which provide nesting habitats for seabirds and in return seabird droppings help fertilize ocean plankton that sustain coral reefs Scientists warn that breaking any part of this interconnected chain could damage the entire ecosystem highlighting the importance of protecting both visible wildlife and hidden underground networks
