Austria | Researchers at the Medical University of Vienna have uncovered a molecular mechanism that explains how brain injuries such as stroke can cause ongoing nerve cell damage beyond the initial trauma. The study shows that disrupted energy metabolism in brain cells plays a key role in worsening neuronal impairment after injury. Scientists also found that overstimulation of nerve cells, linked with glutamate activity, can increase long-term brain dysfunction. The findings suggest that targeting cellular energy processes and neurotransmitter regulation may help develop new protective treatments to reduce long-term disability after brain injuries.
