The newly established laboratory will focus its efforts on decoding “metaflammation”—a complex form of metabolic inflammation that frequently triggers severe, life-threatening complications for individuals undergoing long-term peritoneal dialysis.Peritoneal dialysis offers patients a flexible alternative to traditional clinical treatments by using their own abdominal lining as a natural filter membrane to clear waste products from the blood. However, the specialized fluid used in this procedure relies on high sugar concentrations, which over time can cause severe chronic inflammation. This systemic disruption leads to heightened susceptibility to infections and drastically increases a patient’s risk of developing fatal cardiovascular diseases.Scheduled to operate through 2033, the research program brings together cutting-edge cellular analytics and biotechnology to establish the scientific foundation for next-generation therapeutic solutions. Instead of treating the abdominal environment as a passive filter, scientists will analyze it as an active biological ecosystem to understand how it communicates inflammatory signals to other major organs. By bridging advanced basic science with rapid commercial development, organizers aim to design protective dialysis fluids that prolong patient survival and significantly enhance their daily quality of life.
