Czech Republic | Palacký University Olomouc published the latest environmental findings from the international COLOSS monitoring project, revealing that domestic bee colony mortality rates dropped to 11.3% after a devastating 26% spike during the previous winter season. Managed by the university’s biochemistry and geoinformatics departments in collaboration with national beekeeping associations, the study synthesized data from over 8,600 registered breeders to track winter survival patterns across regional ecosystems. Despite positive nationwide trends, researchers identified severe localized extremes, noting that shortened winter cycles driven by climate change prompt bees to brood longer, generating ideal environments for harmful parasitic mite infestations. To combat this, data scientists are building dynamic climate models to accurately predict regional parasite outbreaks and coordinate synchronized treatment schedules among neighboring apiaries.
