Maxmilián Hrstka, a student at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, won the Magnesia Award for Best Student Comic at this year’s Muriel comic awards in Prague. His gothic drama Ulrich, created as a bachelor’s thesis, impressed the jury with its dark storytelling and visual style. The comic follows a young student experimenting with magic and medicine whose obsession leads to tragic consequences. Around 100 pages long and produced using both digital and traditional techniques, Ulrich is planned as the first part of a trilogy. Two other Sutnar faculty students were also nominated in the same category, highlighting the faculty’s strong presence in the competition.
