University of Helsinki has announced an update to its climate and nature goals, expanding its sustainability roadmap beyond carbon neutrality to include broader environmental impacts. The revised strategy, which will be developed through 2027, aims to better address both climate change and biodiversity challenges. For the first time, the University will assess how its operations affect nature, alongside its carbon emissions. This includes examining both negative environmental impacts and opportunities to contribute positively to ecosystems. The update is guided by recent research and evolving global standards on sustainability and environmental responsibility. As part of the review, the University will reassess its existing carbon neutrality by 2030 roadmap, including the effectiveness of emissions reduction measures and carbon offsetting practices. New findings suggest that some offsetting methods may not deliver meaningful reductions, prompting a more critical and evidence-based approach. The University also reported that its carbon footprint for 2025 rose to 55,467 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, largely due to improved measurement methods, particularly for aviation emissions. Despite this increase, direct emissions have decreased slightly due to reduced heating oil use.Researchers and experts are invited to contribute to shaping the updated roadmap, ensuring the University’s sustainability efforts remain grounded in scientific knowledge and collaborative development.
