University of Boras has launched a unique research project to explore how urban lighting affects both bats and humans, aiming to find solutions that support coexistence in city environments. The study, conducted in central Borås along the Viskan river, focuses on balancing human safety needs with the ecological impact of artificial lighting. Researchers highlight that while people rely on lighting at night for security, many species—especially bats—are highly sensitive to artificial light, particularly cold LED lighting, which can disrupt their behavior and population levels. The two-year project will compare traditional lighting with more environmentally adapted lighting that uses warmer tones and lower intensity. Using drones, sound recordings, and ecological monitoring, researchers will track bat and insect activity while also surveying human perceptions of safety and accessibility. The project brings together experts from multiple disciplines, including ecology, architecture, and lighting design, in collaboration with Borås City and research institute RISE. The goal is to develop knowledge that can improve urban planning, protect biodiversity, and enhance quality of life for residents.
