Poland | A researcher from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Senior Award, marking a significant achievement in international academic collaboration and scientific research.Dr. Michał Balcerek from the Faculty of Mathematics will travel to the United States during the 2026–2027 academic year to conduct advanced research at Colorado State University. His work will focus on mathematical modeling of complex biological processes, particularly those involving stochastic systems and particle movement inside cells. The Fulbright Senior Award is one of the most competitive international scholarship programs, enabling researchers to carry out independent projects at leading institutions in the United States. This year, only 18 scholars were selected from nearly 60 applicants, with just two representing Polish technical universities.Dr. Balcerek specializes in applied mathematics, including stochastic processes, anomalous diffusion, and fractional Brownian motion. His research explores how mathematical tools can better describe biological systems where traditional models fail to capture complex dynamics.During his stay in the US, he will collaborate with a renowned research group combining bio-physics, statistical physics, and data analysis techniques such as single particle tracking. His project aims to develop new mathematical models that more accurately represent the movement of particles within living cells. The opportunity will also allow him to combine theoretical research with practical laboratory experience, enhancing the real-world application of his models. In addition, the program will strengthen international cooperation and promote Polish scientific achievements on a global stage.
