Leaders from European research universities gathered at the YERUN General Assembly in Kongsberg, Norway, to address key challenges in modern science, with a strong focus on dual use research and security concerns. The meeting, hosted by the University of South Eastern Norway, brought together academic leaders to explore how universities should respond to the growing complexity of research with both civilian and potential military applications.Discussions highlighted tensions between scientific openness and responsibility, as well as the need for institutions to take greater accountability for how research outcomes are used and regulated.Representatives from Nicolaus Copernicus University emphasized that universities must engage actively with these issues, as societal expectations increasingly demand not only knowledge creation but also ethical responsibility. The assembly also adopted a new strategic plan for 2026 to 2030 under the theme Thrive Together and confirmed that the next leadership meeting will be hosted in Torun in October 2026.
