The Vrije Universiteit Brussel has announced the winners of its Science Awards 2026, recognizing five pioneering researchers for their outstanding contributions across multiple scientific fields.Among the honorees, Ilse Rooman received the prestigious Roger Van Geen Prize for her internationally recognized work in pancreatic cancer research, focusing on how cells evolve into tumors. She aims to advance her research by mapping early-stage cancer cell development.Willem Staels was awarded the Hilde Bruers Prize for his work in pediatric diabetes, combining clinical practice with research to explore new treatments and potential cures.In the field of structural biology, Wim Versées earned the Franz Bingen Prize for his research on disease-related proteins, contributing to new strategies for tackling neurological disorders and infections.Ellen Goossens received the Liebaers Van Steirteghem Prize for her pioneering work in male fertility, including a groundbreaking achievement in transplanting testicular tissue.The Silvain Loccufier Prize was awarded to Vincent Ginis for his interdisciplinary work combining physics and artificial intelligence, as well as his active role in discussions on the societal impact of AI.The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on 30 April 2026 at the university’s Health Campus in Jette, celebrating excellence in research and innovation while inspiring future generations of scientists.
