A new network-based collaboration model is being planned to strengthen the impact of higher education and research in Finland, led by University of Helsinki. The initiative brings together key institutions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, including Aalto University, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Laurea University of Applied Sciences, and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. The collaboration aims to enhance Finland’s global competitiveness by fostering stronger partnerships across education, research, and innovation. Rather than creating a new institution, the model will function as a flexible network where each university maintains its independence while working toward shared goals. The initiative is expected to improve student mobility, create more flexible study pathways, and strengthen cooperation between academia, the public sector, and businesses. It will also support co-creation in research and innovation, helping institutions respond more effectively to global challenges. The proposal originated from Sari Lindblom, Rector of the University of Helsinki. The first phase focuses on defining joint objectives and operational practices, with initial guidelines expected by June 2026.By leveraging collaboration instead of competition, the network aims to position the Helsinki Metropolitan Area as a stronger hub for knowledge, growth, and international academic excellence.
