University of Helsinki has introduced a new university-level policy aimed at ensuring more responsible, transparent, and fair assessment of research and researchers. The initiative sets common principles to improve how academic work and careers are evaluated across the institution. The policy aligns with international frameworks such as Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment and Declaration on Research Assessment, both of which emphasize moving beyond simple metrics and focusing more on the quality and impact of research.A key feature of the policy is balancing qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Metrics like publication counts or funding levels will only support expert judgment, rather than define it. This ensures that assessments reflect the true value, relevance, and ethical standards of research work.According to Aura Kivilaakso, the policy will guide evaluations in recruitment, career progression, and overall research performance. It also promotes openness, predictability, and fairness in all assessment processes.Additionally, Jaana Nylund highlighted that further guidelines and support systems will be introduced to help integrate these principles into everyday academic practices, including training for recruitment committees. The move reflects a broader effort to ensure that research evaluation is ethical, inclusive, and aligned with real academic contributions, rather than relying solely on numerical indicators.
