Ireland | Atlantic Technological University (ATU) recently concluded the World Finals of Invent for the Planet (IFTP) 2026 at its Galway City campus. Originally scheduled to take place in Qatar, the international event relocated to Ireland at short notice due to ongoing crises in the Middle East. Centered around the 2026 theme, “Reimagining Food Systems for a Resilient Planet,” the 48-hour intensive engineering and entrepreneurship competition challenged top student teams from 32 universities globally to pitch functional solutions to pressing global issues.Texas A&M University’s Team HexCrate took home first place for their sustainable solution targeting post-harvest food loss, followed by Team TerraCell from the Lebanese American University in second. The host nation celebrated a double victory as Team Connect—a collaborative cross-institutional group containing students from ATU, University College Cork, and the University of Galway—clinched the People’s Choice Award and tied for third place overall with Jordan’s Team LeafLock. Team Connect’s winning project, WasteLess, featured a practical mobile app aimed at actively mitigating household food waste.
