Austria | As second-generation and immigrant students from traditional backgrounds navigating European universities, our career choices feel less like personal milestones and more like intense family negotiations. Back home, or within our tight-knit communities, parental influence isn’t just advice—it is an absolute decree rooted in financial survival and rigid cultural norms.
Recent student interviews reveal a heartbreaking divide between our true passions and the crushing pressure to choose a “safe” profession for ultimate job security. Without structured institutional counseling within EU universities to bridge this gap, we are left completely on our own to navigate immense socioeconomic barriers and intense family friction. We find ourselves constantly trading our personal motivations just to appease family expectations. European higher education institutions must step up with targeted, culturally aware career guidance and proactive parental engagement. We deserve an educational path where pursuing our dreams doesn’t require a constant, agonizing battle at the dinner table.
