As secondary students across Europe, we are facing an invisible mental health crisis, and the tools meant to catch us are completely missing the mark. When schools run mental health screenings, they usually lump our struggles together or ignore how they feed into each other. But the reality on the ground is that our internal battles and external outbursts are destroying both our well-being and our futures.
Recent data from large-scale student screenings shows a brutal truth: while drowning in internalizing problems like anxiety or depression quietly crushes our emotional well-being, it is externalizing problems—like acting out or disruptive behavior—that completely torpedoes our academic success. Because schools focus heavily on grades, students who suffer in silence go completely unnoticed until they break, while those acting out are punished rather than supported. We are demanding a screening system that actually sees the whole student. Until European schools recognize the distinct ways mental health ruins our lives, we will keep failing both academically and emotionally.
