Sweden | A long term study by Lund University reveals that moonlight plays a vital role in the life cycle of nocturnal birds such as the red necked nightjar Sweden Researchers found that these birds rely on the phases of the moon to hunt migrate and reproduce more effectively During full moon nights they can hunt insects for longer periods while darker nights force them to conserve energy by reducing movement and lowering body temperature The study also shows that migration and breeding are closely timed with lunar cycles to ensure survival Scientists warn that rising light pollution and climate change could disturb this natural rhythm and pose serious risks to these birds and their ecosystems
