Sweden | A nationwide survey examining public predictions on the societal timeline of artificial intelligence (AI) reveals that over 80 percent of citizens anticipate major medical breakthroughs driven by the technology, with a majority expecting these advancements within the next decade. Conducted by sociological researchers, the study analyzes not only general attitudes toward automation but also when specific technological milestones are expected to materialize.The empirical findings indicate a stark contrast between public sentiment and the rapid progression timelines frequently projected by industry experts. While a vast majority expects AI to revolutionize healthcare diagnostics and treatments, the general public remains highly skeptical about more extreme scenarios. Only 34 percent of respondents believe that superintelligent AI systems operating beyond human control will ever become reality, and just 28 percent think computers will eventually perform all human occupations equally well. Furthermore, public expectations regarding socioeconomic disruptions are split, with roughly 41 percent anticipating a major rise in mass unemployment, while an equal 40 percent believe the technology will significantly elevate the overall standard of living.
