Czech Republic | In celebration of World Bee Day on May 20, a prominent technical university highlighted its newly established rooftop apiary, which bridges advanced technology with urban sustainability. Opened last autumn, the three-hive apiary houses up to 150,000 honeybees (Apis mellifera) during peak summer, helping boost local plant pollination and urban biodiversity. The hives are equipped with the university-developed “ApiVčelař 4.0” system, a modern sensor array that continuously monitors the weight and internal conditions of the colonies. This data is transmitted directly to beekeepers, allowing them to optimize hive care and track environmental health remotely. Beyond producing custom university honey for official gifts, the project serves an educational purpose by introducing the public to modern, tech-driven beekeeping practices.
