Hungary | University of Szeged researchers have introduced an innovative solution to address water scarcity and desertification, particularly in southern Hungary.Presented on Earth Day 2026, the project responds to rising drought levels and declining groundwater, which threaten ecosystems and agriculture. The team identified natural depressions and former riverbeds that can be used for water retention and groundwater replenishment.Using advanced spatial data and mapping, researchers developed a decision-support system to guide effective water management planning. The initiative was carried out with national water authorities, enabling real-world application in environmental and infrastructure projects. The approach is expected to serve as a model for improving water balance across Hungary’s lowland regions and is gaining international attention, with plans for publication in a leading scientific journal.
