Belgium | Vrije Universiteit Brussel has announced a phased approach to implementing staff cost reductions required by the Flemish government. The university is facing a total structural savings target of €24.4 million. Following discussions with authorities, nearly €14 million in staff-related savings will now be spread over five years instead of being implemented immediately.University leadership stated that the extended timeline will reduce the immediate impact on staff and allow a more gradual, socially responsible adjustment process. Measures will include natural attrition, limited hiring, voluntary departures, and restructuring of activities. However, €10.5 million in operating budget cuts must still be implemented within the current year, requiring operational changes to maintain financial stability. The university emphasized continued consultation with staff representatives throughout the process.
