Czech Republic | Doctoral students are increasingly reporting that hidden pressures and unspoken challenges within PhD programs are affecting their mental health and long-term academic plans. Many say that while doctoral study is often viewed as independent research training, the reality includes significant stress linked to finances, supervision quality, and work-life balance.
One of the most commonly reported issues is financial difficulty, with many students struggling to manage living costs alongside demanding research workloads. In addition to financial strain, students also describe certain topics—such as supervisor relationships or family responsibilities—as difficult to openly discuss within academic environments, creating a sense of silence around key problems.
These unspoken or “taboo” issues are linked with higher levels of stress, anxiety, burnout, and thoughts of leaving academia altogether. Many doctoral candidates feel that not addressing these concerns openly can negatively impact both well-being and academic persistence.
The findings highlight growing concern about mental health support in doctoral education and the need for more open, supportive, and transparent academic environments for PhD students.
