Hungary | For university students trying to pass their professional English courses, language exams have turned into an absolute nightmare. A major study tracking English education students has exposed a massive academic crisis, revealing that more than half of the entire class completely failed to perform well on their speaking tests due to deep emotional and social barriers.
During these high-stakes oral exams, students are being pushed to their breaking points by a combination of severe shyness, nervousness, and a paralyzing fear of criticism. Instead of being a supportive space to learn, the classroom has become a source of intense anxiety. Vulnerable students are completely freezing up because they are terrified of making mistakes or being judged by others, which shatters their confidence before they even open their mouths.
This intense mental friction is made much worse by a severe lack of speaking practice and social isolation, as students struggle to find any real-world opportunities to practice English outside of class. When the panic sets in during a test, it triggers a chain reaction that completely wrecks their fluency, vocabulary usage, and grammar. Being forced into demanding performances without proper speaking support or anxiety management is creating overwhelming pressure, leaving the majority of students feeling isolated, defeated, and unable to succeed.
