As European university students, we are trapped in an academic bubble. Our curriculum frames the history of disability as a flawless European triumph, charting a neat line from ancient superstition straight to Western enlightenment. We memorize how thinkers like Locke and Braille turned blindness into a scientific experiment, treating our continent’s progress as the ultimate global standard.
But this Eurocentric narrative is creating a massive student problem: it completely erases the rest of the world. In East Asia, tactile literacy and disability rights took a radically different path that totally challenges our Western ideals. This narrow teaching leaves us intellectually stranded. It triggers deep academic anxiety when we realize we are paying for a world-class education, only to receive a one-sided, second-rate perspective of human history.
