Denmark | A new animated film from Aarhus University is bringing the story of plant evolution and human influence to life through a unique collaboration between research and creative industries.Titled Seeds of Change, the film explores how humans have shaped plant development for over 10,000 years, long before the concepts of genetics and DNA were understood. Created by the Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University, the project brings together scientists, animators, and creative experts from Viborg Municipality, The Animation Workshop, and the Sci Vi network. The film highlights how early agricultural practices influenced plant traits such as taste, resilience, and yield, ultimately shaping human societies, diets, and economies. Today, modern research continues this journey by identifying genetic traits that can improve crops, making them more resistant to diseases, climate change, and environmental stress.Researchers emphasize that fewer than ten plant species currently provide most of the world’s food, making global food systems vulnerable. The film aims to raise awareness about the importance of diversifying crops and using advanced breeding technologies to ensure sustainability.By combining science with animation, Seeds of Change makes complex research more accessible to the public, showing how innovation in agriculture can contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future. The project also highlights Viborg’s role as a creative hub, where collaboration between academia and the arts enables ideas to move quickly from concept to visual storytelling.
