Finland | A study conducted by the University of Helsinki shows that natural landscapes in the Canary Islands attract far more tourists than previously believed. Researchers analysed over 720000 social media photographs shared from the islands and found that around one third were taken in natural environments, while a quarter came from protected conservation areas. The study also revealed that tourism in the region is not limited to beaches and nightlife, as many visitors actively explore mountains, forests and wildlife areas. Researchers say these findings highlight the importance of nature in shaping travel behaviour and suggest that conservation and tourism planning should give greater attention to protecting natural environments.
